The Briganti Walk runs along the ancient border line between the Papal State and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, following in the footsteps of the outlaws who dominated the area between the Marsica in Abruzzo and the Cicolano in Lazio. It starts from Casale Le Crete in Tagliacozzo (770 m asl) and continues through the villages of Poggio Filippo, Santo Stefano, Valdevarri, Poggiovalle, Nesce, Villerose, Monte Rose, Spedino, Cartore, Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, Rosciolo and Magliano de ' Marsi, before returning to the starting point. A circular route therefore that crosses the Val de Varri, the Valle del Salto and the slopes of Monte Velino, the places where the Cartore band operated.

Day 1: Arrival in Sante Marie (850 m) and walk to Santo Stefano (1,050 m). Short stage that allows you to get to Sante Marie by car or train and walk a bit to get into the spirit of the journey. Overnight in a farmhouse, typical cuisine. Difference in altitude: 380. KM: 6

2nd day: from Santo Stefano (1,050 m) to Valdevarri (1,020 m) and to Nesce (850 m). You arrive in the beautiful medieval village of Nesce, where you can sleep in a farmhouse. Possible also overnight stay in Valdevarri in private homes with home-cooked dinner, simple rooms. You enter Val de Varri, the least touristy valley of the journey, just think that the road that crosses it was paved a few years ago. From the Val de Varri you cross and enter the Valle del Salto, passing over a small mountain, and descending to the village of Poggiovalle. It is the country of brigands, from here some famous brigands came. Under the village flows the Salto river, on one side there is Nesce. Overnight stay and typical cuisine. Difference in altitude: 400 KM: 14

Day 3: Nesce (850 m) - Villerose - Spedino - Cartore (944 m). You go down the Salto river walking side by side for a while. Then you pass under Monte Rose up to Spedino, then take the dirt road to the beautiful village of Cartore, home to a famous band of brigands. Overnight in the beautiful village of Cartore, rooms with restaurant. Difference in altitude: 440. KM: 17

4th day: Cartore ring - Duchess lake. The departure for this grandiose, and long, loop that includes the ascent to at least three points above 2000 m, is near the town of Cartore (944 m), and almost everything takes place in the Monti della Duchessa Nature Reserve. With a path on the remains of the ancient moraines of the glacier that once occupied the valley, we arrive at Lago della Duchessa at an altitude of 1788 m. Return with dinner and overnight stay. Difference in altitude: 950. KM: 13

5th Day: Cartore (944 m) - Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta - Rosciolo - Magliano de 'Marsi - Le Crete (770 m). We go to Rosciolo, a beautiful medieval village. From Cartore, go up to Passo Le Forche, under Monte Velino, and descend to Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, another place full of suggestions, including a magnificent Romanesque church, a masterpiece of art from the 10th century. You pass the village of Magliano, then go up the slope of Mount San Nicola and descend to Le Crete (where there is the Casale Le Crete b & b and the Gargano agri-camping site). Difference in altitude: 550. KM: 23

Day 6: Location Le Crete (Tagliacozzo) - San Donato - Scanzano - Poggetello - Sante Marie (850 m). in Scanzano and then in Tubione and Sante Marie, along small roads and paths. You can collect your certificate. Difference in altitude: 560. KM: 21

What To Bring
