Departures on request April / October

The Samnites, the first people to inhabit the lands in the heart of Upper Molise, have today left us evidence of their civilization through the findings of important archaeological sites. For approx. 84 km from Isernia to Agnone fascinating places, with a magical atmosphere, are completely unexpected to the traveler in the open countryside and it is here following the paths of the tratturi, ancient paths of beaten grass, that our itinerary winds through the most beautiful places of this region still little explored and free from mass tourism.

1st day: Arrival in Isernia. Individual arrival in Isernia, a city rich in history and prestige, also called the city of trekking by nature lovers thanks to the countless excursions that can be done in the Apennines. Check-in at the hotel and visit of the historic center whose pearl and symbolic monument of the city is undoubtedly the "Fraternal Fountain" considered one of the most beautiful fountains in Italy. Dinner and overnight.

2nd Day: From Isernia to Miranda. From the historic center we head towards the Palaeolithic archaeological site La Pineta dating back to about 700,000 years ago, considered one of the most important and ancient sites in Europe. We then walk a small stretch of the Regio Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela, a large green road that gives us the beauty of a particular flora from wild orchids, to mushrooms, to Rosa canina. The road continues uphill to the delightful village of Pesche resembling a small nativity scene carved into the mountain, we continue on a comfortable cart track between splendid views of the Meta and Matese mountains and between the woods and pastures of the Oriented Nature Reserve up to the church of Santa Lucia (1140 m) from here the historic path at the foot of the chapel, on the right side of the valley will take us to the town of Miranda (900 m) which will amaze us with the variegated colors of the houses, the castle and the unspoiled nature that surrounds it. Stay and dinner. Difference in altitude: -480 / +900. Difficulty: Medium. KM: 17. Travel time: 6 h. Road surface: asphalted roads, cart tracks.

Day 3: From Miranda to Carovilli. From the main square of Miranda we walk through an old mule track that continues through a centuries-old beech forest and over wonderful colored pastures with a thousand blooms of wild orchids. After the Casino Pizzi we continue towards a pass between Monte Pietrereie (1321 meters above sea level) and Monte Totila (1359 meters above sea level) which allow us to observe in the distance the ancient presence of the "Tratturi" that united the pastures of Abruzzo with the Tavoliere delle Puglia. We meet and walk along the Tratturo Lucera-Castel di Sangro and stop for a stop at the church of San Domenico, a place of devotion for shepherds during the transhumance of their flocks. We finally arrived at Carovilli, an ancient village founded in the Lombard period dating back to the year one thousand, crossed by a small sheep track that acts as an exchanger between the two main sheep tracks Lucera-Castel di Sangro and Celano-Foggia, the most important of the Apennine ridge, the town is also known for truffles which are so precious that they are defined as "vegetable diamonds". Hotel accommodation and dinner. Difference in altitude: -653 / +780. Difficulty: Medium. KM: 19. Travel time: 7 h. Road surface: mule tracks, pastures, wooded paths.

4th Day: From Carovilli to Vastogirardi. Following in the footsteps of the most important transhumance civilization of this land, we set out along a first stretch of grassy path until we reach Monte Ingotta (1035 m.) Which gives us beautiful views of the Majella. We cross the second longest tratturo in Italy, the Celano-Foggia, at the foot of Monte Pizzi (1373 m.) To then enter one of the most enchanting woods in all of Molise, the "Mab di Monte di Mezzo Reserve" since 1971 one of the eight Italian UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, a real corner of paradise inside which there is a visitor center and a naturalistic museum as well as various paths completely immersed in the uncontaminated nature of the entire wooded area. We continue our journey on the de Lellis path up to the village of Vastogirardi (1200 m.), One of the smallest villages in Molise, whose ancient enclosed medieval castle makes it unique in its kind. Hotel accommodation and dinner. Difference in altitude: -441 / +745. Difficulty: Easy. KM: 17. Travel time: 7 h. Road surface: wooded paths, dirt roads.

5th Day: From Vastogirardi to Capracotta. We leave the village and head towards the small archaeological area in Sant’Angelo which preserves the remains of a Samnite temple from the second century BC. which is worth visiting. We continue walking on a grassy path and go up to the Crocetta up to Monte Cavallerizzo (1524 m.) Where we visit one of the most beautiful cyclopean walls of Sannio pentro. A splendid beech forest accompanies us to the summit of Monte Capraro (1730 m.) Where we can observe the Matese and the Majella in all their beauty, from here the descent on a stretch of alpine ski slope leads us to the gates of Capracotta, the highest town in Molise (1421 m.). We visit the church of the Assumption without losing sight of the incredible landscape of the Majella mountain massif and reach our accommodation for dinner and overnight stay. Difference in altitude: -450 / +840. Difficulty: Medium-Difficult. KM: 12. Travel time: 6 h. Road surface: wooded paths, grassy paths.

6th Day: From Capracotta to Agnone. Leaving the village of Capracotta we head towards the chapel of S. Lucia with the attractive garden of Apennine flora that we visit before starting our climb through a comfortable cart track to the top of Monte Campo (1759 m.) And walking along the ridge we remain fascinated by the spectacular view of the Majella, the Adriatic Sea, the Gargano and the multicolored Molise hills that slope down towards the Tavoliere delle Puglie. At ford Liscia we stop for a break and to photograph the beautiful views. From Castel Barone we descend into the Valley from where we reach the important town of Agnone (830 m.) Nicknamed "Athens of Sannio" and famous for its many churches, historic buildings, and for the Pontifical Marinelli Foundry, the oldest Italian foundry. and among the oldest in the world specializing in the construction of bells. We visit the center and its attractions and take a bus to reach the Isernia station where our fascinating Walk ends in the magical lands of Alto Sannio. Difference in altitude: -700 / +830. Difficulty: Medium. KM: 19. Travel time: 7 h. Road surface: cart tracks, dirt paths.

What To Bring

The right "attitude": with the right attitude you are ready to face everything! Whether you are leaving for a self-guided tour, as a group, as a couple, with your family, the right attitude is the first thing to put in your backpack, leaving your "thoughts" at home!

Waterproof jacket and pants, sun protection: we can organize everything for your trip… but alas we can't do anything for the weather. So keep an eye on the weather forecast and always carry a waterproof jacket / cape and trousers, sunscreen cream and several layers of clothes suitable for the period (plan to dress "onion").
