The viaSpluga is a cultural and hiking trail in the central Alps that has been connecting the two towns of Thusis and Chiavenna for centuries with the Graubünden, Rhaeto-Romansh, Walser and Lombard peoples. Most of the viaSpluga winds along mule tracks, where the original structure is largely maintained or has been restored.
The itinerary, in addition to favoring the encounter with history, allows you to come into contact with a unique mountain landscape and with the local population, whose life has been marked for generations by the traffic that revolves around the pass.
The viaSpluga has a total length of 65 km. Starting from Thusis (720 m), it crosses the famous Viamala gorge to Splügen (1457 m). From the town it turns southwards, going up to the Spluga Pass, which is the highest point of the route, to 2115 m. From here, the descent begins, crossing the entire Spluga Valley up to the 333 m of Chiavenna.

From the village of Montespluga, the itinerary continues on the right of the artificial basin to reach one of the two dams and enjoy the special view of the Cardinello Gorge: one of the sections that you remember with the most emotion! A canyoning that was obtained in the past with so much effort, between the looming rock on the left and above the heads and the gorge that sinks to the right up to the waters of the stream. The descent requires caution, but it is still easy and leads to the huts of Sosta, Mottaletta with its elegant wooden huts and finally to Isola.
